England along with Welsh Drawn Together for RWC 2027 in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in the same group for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a major early clash in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their infamous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the English team's shock early exit.

Other Notable Group Pairings

Ireland alongside the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group once again, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they claimed a convincing win, with Scotland unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, both made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of these two groups cannot meet holders and top-ranked the Springboks until the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks top their own group.

Knockout Implications

Should the groups conclude in line with the current world rankings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from the likes of England and the Irish until the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia find themselves alongside their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster fixture aimed at launch the event.

In other groups, holders South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in 2023.

This edition will introduce a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six group winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
